Scrapping of Railway east of McCloud, CA

by Shasta Cascade on April 29, 2009

Starting in July 2008, the McCloud Railway began scrapping the rail line running east from McCloud to Burney.  Most of the line runs along Highway 89.

The railway was scrapped because it had become too expensive to maintain.  Freight traffic had dropped significantly over the years, and revenue didn’t meet repairs and upkeep.

Meanwhile, some groups are trying to save track around Burney Falls as part of a “Rails to Trails” project.  It appears that this project has run into trouble due to lack of support from some landowners.
