Dangerous Icy Conditions on Hwy 89

by Shasta Cascade on December 13, 2009

Last week’s Arctic cold snap created dangerous conditions on Hwy 89 between I-5 and McCloud and kept local tow truck drivers busy with multiple car accidents.

In one head-on collision two miles west of McCloud, a driver in the westbound lanes ran into icy slush, causing her to slide into oncoming traffic.  The driver had a head-on collision with an eastbound driver, and both cars were totaled.  Fortunately, both drivers were out of the hospital within a day.

This week, daytime high temperatures are forecasted to rise into the 40’s.  Nightimes lows are expected to be in the high 20’s.  Precipitation is expected off and on all week, potentially creating dangerous conditions at night and the early morning.
