McCloud History: What is a Hoo-Hoo?

Hoo Hoo Park, 1935

Hoo Hoo Park, 1935

Hoo-Hoo park is located on the east side of McCloud.  It’s a really nice park: it’s way nicer than you would ever expect to find in a small town. The playing fields are huge, and the grass is well maintained. The playground equipment is freshly painted and in perfect working condition.

When I first saw the park name, I thought it was a playful title meant to appeal to children, along the lines of a Dr. Seuss book. But recently, during McCloud’s Heritage Days in August, I read that McCloud’s Heritage Museum was putting on a play called “Hoo-Hoo’s (Who’s a snark?)”.  I read further and discovered that the Hoo-Hoo’s are a formal organization, and they were responsible for the establishment of the park many decades ago. I also read that they pushed for the paving of Highway 89.

The Hoo-Hoo’s are a fraternal organization for those working in the forest products industry. Their official name is the International Concatenated Order of Hoo-Hoo, Incorporated. The name of the organization is based upon the story “The Hunting of the Snark” by Lewis Carroll.

On the organization’s website, there’s a map that shows the physical location of their chapters. I looked at the map for Northern California and saw there were about fifteen chapters in the north state. Of those, olnly three had green pins next to them, and the rest had red pins, which I assume mean those chapters are not active.

It’s sad to see that this organization is much smaller than they used to be. If you’ve ever enjoyed Hoo-Hoo park, then you have this organization to thank.

Thanks for your submission and nice comments on this wonderful little park. As kids, we spent many hours playing and dreaming there.
