Forest Fire Smoke Fills Valley

by Shasta Cascade on August 5, 2009

Mt. Shasta – Area residents woke up this morning to hazy skies caused by a series of fires burning east of town.

Two small fires are burning about 15 miles east of McCloud. About 45 more fires are burning further east around Burney.

The fires were caused by a lightning storm that moved through the area last weekend.

Highway 89 is closed from Highway 44 to Highway 299. A warning sign is posted just outside of Mt. Shasta on Hwy 89, and cars can be seen pulled over consulting maps for alternative routes.

On the websites for the Redding Searchlight and Burney Intermountain News, residents who are away from their homes can be seen leaving messages asking for conditions near their homes.
