End of an Era: Last Local Ride of Steam Engine #25

by Shasta Cascade on November 3, 2008

McCloud, CA – With a burst from its whistle that echoed off the surrounding hills, Steam Engine #25 made its last local runs during the weekend of Nov 1st-2.

Due to the high cost of maintenance and upkeep, the McCloud Railway intends to put the icon up for sale. Built in 1925 by the American Locomotive Company, the engine was best known for its appearance in the film “Stand By Me”.

On Saturday Nov 1, the rides were organized by the McCloud Railway. Sunday excursions were chartered by the Pacific Locomotive Association, based out of the Bay Area.

The McCloud Railway plans to continue operating the Shasta Sunset Dinner Train.

I love this video take on the trains last ride. Most McCloudians would also love to see this again. We are still missing #25 terribly. this video brought tears to my eyes and I would like to share this, if I may.
