It may be summer, but the Mt Shasta area is still experiencing unseasonably cool weather. If you’re traveling to the area to do some fishing or camping this weekend, be sure to dress warm for cool nights.
This week, daytime highs are in the mid-70’s, and nighttime lows are expected in the mid ’40s around Mt. Shasta City at 3,500 ft. If you plan to go to higher elevations, temperatures will be colder and you might even encounter snow on high trails above 8,500 feet. The sky is mostly clear, with scattered white fluffy cumulus clouds.
Beware of extremely dangerous river conditions throughout the entire area. Snow is melting rapidly, causing rivers to be extremely cold and fast. Last week a brother and sister drowned in the Trinity River and are still missing. News sources are reporting that their bodies might not be found until river levels go down later in the summer.
Conditions continue to be dangerous on Mt. Shasta. Last weekend, ten climbers were injured and seven had to be rescued by CHP helicopter. This week, winds are extremely treacherous at higher elevations, and falling ice chunks have wiped out some climbers.
If you travel to the area, prepare accordingly.
